Stop Gun Violence.
The shooting in Connecticut was a HORRIFIC event. I have been ill to my stomach since finding out about it. I am emotionally disturbed by the images I’ve seen online. Like the rest of you, I am I can not imagine what would cause this.
I am not a gun owner. I don’t believe I ever will be.
But … before we go blaming guns, let’s look at actual, real fact here. The statistics in this graphic are correct, I assume, though they are incomplete. I’m not disputing their correctness. I am disputing the intent of those who created this graphic & the fact that it implies, which is that the USA is a far more murderous nation than any other simply because of the fact that we can personally own guns.
I Googled the 2011 population of each of these nations and divided it by the numbers of murders by gun given in the graphic. Below are the percentages, per capita, of murders by gun for each nation:
Yes, the USA has more deaths by gun, per capita, than all these other industrialized nations. But the difference is in the thousandths of a percentage point. Statistically, the USA simply does not experience a significantly greater number of murders by gun than these other nations. At all. Why? Because our population is significantly greater than all these other nations.
See what knowing the facts, actual empirical evidence, does? Kinda changes the way you look at this graphic, doesn’t it? Well, it should. And, IMO, it should anger you.
Why? This graphic is woefully incomplete because it does not provide the year, or years, each of these statistics of murder by gun were taken from. This graphic exists solely for the purposes of creating support for anti-gun legislation by engendering an emotional reaction in individuals who are, because they have seen images & read reports of a horrific incident that only just occurred today, predisposed to feel that emotional response. That is all this graphic is for. Manipulation.
This graphic is emotionally manipulative. Period. Full stop. It was created to take advantage of people who have been affected by the Connecticut shooting. It is ignorant of actual, real fact (in fact, it actively ignores the bigger picture of the issue) & desires that we all be ignorant of actual, real fact.
I find it repugnant. And such graphics do NOTHING to help anyone at this time, when such a tragedy is so fresh for us.
If those who created this graphic are interested in having a rational discussion about guns, let’s do that. By all means. It is a discussion that should be had in all the nations listed above on an ongoing basis. But, please, do not insult my intelligence & take advantage of me emotionally to make your political point. It serves no one.
No one. Especially the victims of this horrible shooting.
Especially in a time like this when we’re all affected by such a tragic & horrific event. Those who created this graphic are using the deaths of 28 people, 20 of whom were children (as of this writing), for their personal political agenda.
Knock it off.
